East Toledo around the clock blitz

Posted: Updated:
The results are out from the Toledo Police Department's nine-day round-the-clock blitz. The officers hit the east side and made 156 arrests, 34 of which were felony arrests.

During the blitz, police only had three reported burglaries in the area. They say that's a big difference from what these neighbors normally deal with.

We talked to a couple who noticed more police in the area as they strolled with their 14-month-old daughter Lilyann. "It definitely keeps people out of your neighborhood that shouldn't be there. I don't mind if you have nothing to worry about walk freely and enjoy your community," says East Toledo resident Teairra Moton.

Officers are taking extra trips around neighborhoods on the east side. Last week, officers conducted a special enforcement blitz. They targeted Front street, East broadway, Navarre and Oak.

"Give them a little extra enforcement try to weed out some of the bad influences and some of the problems that are plaguing that neighborhood for some time," said Sgt. Joe Heffernan of the Toledo Police department.

According to Toledo's new online targeted crime map. People living on the east side are dealing with robberies, burglaries, prostitution, and other violent crimes.

"The ultimate goal is long term solutions to these problems and maybe if we can board up some houses take care of some graffiti or litter or concentrate on  some of the main perpetrates in those neighborhoods and put them away then that goes a long way in making that a nice place to live," said Sgt. Heffernan.

"I kind of like to see more activities for the youth to keep them out of the street. You know they're hanging out 10, 11, 12 , 1 in the morning and kind of get rid of some of the abandon houses," said Moton.

She says, if the city can tear down boarded-up homes, it may make east toledo a better and safer place to live. Officers say more targeted enforcement operations are schedule for the summer.
