Memorial Day parade is personal for those who lost comrades

Posted: Updated:
Thousands of people both young and old filled the streets of Downtown Toledo for the Memorial Day Parade.

For many families, the parade is a tradition. Chris Weber's grandfather served in WWII and his family hasn't missed the parade in five years. "It makes me think of him a little extra, knowing what he did for the country."

Crew Chief Keith Holliker is a 22-year-member of the 180th Fighter Wing. Today he walked with his wife and sons in the parade to honor a fellow service member killed in Iraq, Lt. Colonel Kevin Sonnenberg. "I personally was in Iraq when Lt. Colonel Sonnenberg crashed. It's a day to remember people that unfortunately aren't with us anymore and that are no longer here with us."

The parade honored not only those who lost their lives, but those currently serving in the military and veterans like Army Veteran Edward Seary. "We come down every year because we honor everybody that served. We served, so we know the sacrifices."

Some hoped to set a good example for children, by showing them how important it is to honor veterans. Sylvania and Perrysburg will hold Memorial Day Parades on Monday.
