5 years after Nevaeh's murder, family demands justice

Posted: Updated:
Five years ago, five-year-old Nevaeh Buchanan disappeared while playing outside at the apartment complex where her family lived in Monroe.

Her body was found a few weeks later encased in cement in a shallow grave along the banks of the River Raisin. No arrests have been made in her death.

On Saturday friends, family and members of the community gathered in St. Mary's Park to honor her short life and to continue to look for justice for Nevaeh.

Among those attending are search volunteers who spent weeks looking for the missing girl. They are pleading with the public for more tips in this case and reminding people there is a $50,000 reward to information leading to an arrest.

Nevaeh's Grandmother says the family wants answers. "We never in a million years thought this would happen to us. We need the public's help. We need the media's help."

Risa Smith from Justice For Nevaeh said, "Not only does it take a village to raise a child, but it's gonna take a village to get this child justice. I firmly believe that. Somebody knows. I don't think there's anybody out there that can commit a murder flawlessly."

Volunteers plan on plastering Monroe with reward posters.

Among those helping were Selia Seipp and Abby Johnson, two playmates of Nevaeh's.  Family friend Laurel Roberston says it's hard. "I feel so bad for them. I almost didn't come just because of the emotional factor of it. But we wanted to show the family that we do still remember and she hasn't been forgotten."

Detectives in Monroe say this is not a cold case and they are actively investigating and will continue to follow all leads. Anyone with information is asked to call the Monroe Sheriff's Office at 734-243-7070.
