Woodville Mall demolition nears finish line

Posted: Updated:
Woodville Mall closed for good three years ago, but the building is finally coming down.  Sears, the only open store today, is set to shut its doors mid-July.  Old anchors like The Andersons and Elder-Beerman stores will most likely get torn down later this year.

"When the mall was first built, it was a big hit," says Northwood administrator, Bob Anderson.  "Everybody loved it and came from miles and miles away.  And then it went through the middle age and it gradually died."

Demolition at the former mall location started in the fall and will wrap up by the end of the summer.  The goal is to get the entire 80-acre site flattened and cleared out so that businesses or developments could move right in.

"Hopefully we won't be able to tell there was a mall there," says Anderson.

No specific plans are in place post-demolition, but city leaders say it's a prime location for commercial development with its easy access to highways and homes.   Residents would like to see more restaurants or stores in the soon-to-be-vacant lot.

"I remember coming over for the grand opening when I was a little kid," says Ken Pettit.  "I miss it."

"You've got Walmart and Kmart on Navarre Avenue but over in this area the mall was pretty much it for a lot of people," says Darlene Riddle who grew up in Reno Beach but now lives in Florida.  "Hopefully they get it back and put some really nice stores in here again."

After years of talk, Toledo's first dog park is moving forward. An official groundbreaking for the Glass City Dog Park is set for August. There are more than 62,000 registered pups in Lucas County but there is no place for dogs to run freely. In a matter of weeks, that's changing. "This is about quality of life and improving Toledo," says Steve Serchuk, a board member with Toledo Unleashed. Serchuk works with the non-profit Toledo Unleashed.
