Fremont mother determined to succeed in STRIVE program

Posted: Updated:
An update to a story we've told you about last month. The strive program helps people in the community pass the Ohio Graduation Test and get their diploma. Tonight we'll introduce you to a woman who won't budge until she makes the grade.

This student says you can do anything in life, no matter how old you are. 38-year-old Consulea Reece is doing something she hasn't done in 20 years. She's getting tutored in science and math.  Reece never graduated from high school and is determined to get her diploma.

"I have three children and of course I attended high school got good grades, but my kids life set in. I had to work as a single mom. I just decided that I need to come back and get my diploma and show my kids anything is possible no matter how old you are," she says.

Reece drives from Fremont once a week for two hours of tutoring. She's also enrolled in the Strive Program. The summer tutoring program begins June 6, 2014 and helps anyone of any age pass the ohio graduation test.

Retired teacher Joanna Phillips is tutoring Reece so she can achieve her dreams.

"If you've go that inside you and you know you want to do it  you're really determined to do it you should get into a program like strive," she says.

Phillips has been a Strive tutor from the very start. Educators say the test isn't easy so don't wait until the last minute

"The best thing to know about strive it only takes 10 hours in order for you to test to take the state mandate test but with strive if you come everyday and that's a requirement you can get 17, 18 hours of tutoring," says Officer Flo Wormely, founder of the Strive program.

Dedication and hard work have been the answer to the equation for Reece. She hopes to inspire others who don't have a diploma or never finished high school.

"Don't be afraid to come back and get your education because they way things are rolling now you need your diploma to get to wherever it is your trying to go. At this point in life I'm trying to I want to go back to school and become a probation officer. I can't do it without my diploma," says Reece.
