The Office of Inspector General is investigating dozens of Veterans Affairs hospitals across the country in the wake of the VA scandal.

13abc continues our I-Team investigation Heroes Denied from the VA medical center in Ann Arbor which is in charge of Toledo operations.

The Office of Inspector General in Washington, D.C., is not yet releasing the names of the VA hospitals under investigation. They're not saying yet whether Ann Arbor is on the list. The VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System oversees Toledo's VA outpatient clinic.

The VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System served 61,712 veterans last year with 14,819 receiving services at the VA Toledo Outpatient Clinic on South Detroit Avenue.

Derek Atkinson, Public Affairs Officer for the VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System, tells 13abc, "To the best of our knowledge we are not one of the VAs under investigation by the Office of Inspector General."

Eric Shinseki resigned as Secretary of Veterans Affairs on Friday after allegations of a systemic cover-up of long delays in care for veterans.  This began in Phoenix, Arizona, when a whistleblower said that as many as 40 veterans died waiting up to 21 months for care at a VA hospital.

"I extend an apology to the people whom I care most deeply about and that's the veterans of this great country to their families and loved ones who I have been honored to serve for more than 5 years now,” says Shinseki.

"I haven't seen that situation happen here yet, thank goodness,” says Robert Stovall of Toledo who is battling leukemia.

The 66-year-old served in the Air Force during the Vietnam era.  Stovall says he has no problem making appointments and getting medication from the VA Toledo outpatient clinic.

"I think that their healthcare system is excellent,” says Stovall. “I think their eye care is excellent. I think their therapy is excellent."

The spokesperson for VA Ann Arbor says Ann Arbor’s Medical Center and Toledo’s Outpatient Clinic “… recently completed an internal audit with no significant findings in conjunction with the national audit of all VA sites of care."

    Toledo firefighters are investigating the cause of a large fire Thursday morning that damaged three vacant homes.  The flames broke out around 2:00 a.m. in the 1000 block of Harding Drive near South Hawley.  Witnesses say flames broke out at one home and then quickly spread to houses on both sides.  No injuries were reported.
