Ohio State Baseball Team, Women’s Golfer Claudia Lim Among Big Ten Sportsmanship Honorees

Posted: Updated:
The Ohio State baseball team and Claudia Lim of the women’s golf team were recognized by the Big Ten as Outstanding Sportsmanship Award winners, the Big Ten Conference announced Thursday.

One member of each varsity sports team on every campus was chosen by his or her institution as a Sportsmanship Award honoree. From each university's list, two Outstanding Sportsmanship Award winners were then selected. All of the Sportsmanship Award honorees have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. In addition, these student-athletes must be in good academic standing and must have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting.

When their teammate, Zach Farmer, was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia in late April, the Ohio State baseball team wasted no time rallying around the freshman left-hander. Within days, members of the team gathered with athletics department staff members to find any way possible to help support Zach. As Zach began his fight, a website, ZF11.org, was established to help give the information and resources necessary to support Zach and his family but also to help raise awareness of the disease.

At the same time, teammates and staff members collaborated with Be The Match, an organization that helps find bone marrow matches for those in need of a transplant. Unfortunately, none of Zach's siblings were a match so 37 team members and staff were swabbed to become part of the Be The Match registry to help support their teammate and the cause. The Ohio State athletics department had an on-campus swabbing while the team also held a drive at the last home game where fans were able to come out to get swabbed and join the registry.

Throughout the month of May, team and athletics department members spread the word about Zach and the registry through local and national media outlets. With all of this going on throughout the season, Zach’s teammates continued to visit their teammate as he fought the disease at Ohio State’s James Cancer Hospital.

Zach was discharged from the hospital May 28 but, with the support of many around him, still has a fight in front of him.

Lim, a junior on the Buckeye women’s golf team, has been mentioned as a caring, trustworthy person who always puts the needs of others and teammates before her own. An Academic All-Big Ten selection, Lim recently helped the women’s golf team to a seventh-place finish at the NCAA Championships, marking the third best mark in program history.
