Former Oregon mayor visits all 3,144 counties

Posted: Updated:
She's off the campaign trail, and on to different kind of path.

The former mayor of Oregon has now made her mark in every county in the country, all 3,144 of them.

Marge Brown is the vice president of a group called the Extra Miler Club.

There are roughly 100 of them, but by Brown's count, she is only the 16th person in the country to visit every county. That's the goal of the Extra Milers.

"Their motto is 'The shortest distance between two points is noooo fun,'" Brown explains.

It took Brown 21 years to complete her journey and it took her off the beaten path at random.

"Any time we had a chance, we would take off," Brown says. "I remember my daughter calling me one day and saying,'Where are you?' I said, 'we're in Kansas.' 'what?!'"

The rules are simple: You have to be on the ground for your trip to count - no flyovers.

You also have to see a sign that shows the name of the county you're in.

Driving through is only acceptable if you see a sign.

Brown also took pictures and kept a log book as proof.

The past two years, brown had more time to get to some of the more remote counties - in Alaska and Hawaii.

She even rode a mule to get to a leper colony on one of the Hawaiian islands.

"You could fly-in, you could walk in, or you could ride the mule," Brown says. "So, I rode the mule."

Last summer, brown hit that major milestone and crossed into Barry County, Michigan.

She saved that county for last.

Since brown was born in '37, she arrived on Route 37 at 12:37 in the afternoon.

It's a symbolic end to the symbolic journey of a lifetime.
