Man relives his narrow escape from burning apartment

Posted: Updated:
The day after a fire ripped through the Hidden Trail Apartments in Monroe, a man rescued from the flames is still coming to terms with coming so close to losing his life.

Charred, boarded-up ruins are all that remain of the building that dozens called home. Among them, Nick Furlong.  He narrowly escaped the flames by climbing out  window and screaming for help.

"Yesterday I was climbing out of a window right there and I wasn't sure if I was going to be alive or not." Sunday he was still in shock as he visited the scene of the fire. His home is in ruins and his possessions are gone. "I stand back and look. It's hard to believe that I lived right up there. That was my living room."

Furlong said he tried to get out the door of his third-floor apartment, but ran into a wall of thick smoke and flames. "I was a little scared when I couldn't get out the front door. When your only exist is blocked, and you know there is no chance of getting out of there. I had no idea what I was going to do."

His apartment began to fill with smoke.  "My whole apartment started filling up with smoke. It was getting hard to see and breathe, I had to take a shirt and cover my mouth."

He then opened his window and called for help. Fortunately, fire crews were able to reach him with a long ladder. He made it out with just the clothes on his back.

"All my stuff was up there most of it can be replaced, but I'm an artist so I had a lot of painting, drawings, sculptures, that stuff I just can't get back."

Furlong says that despite losing all of his material possessions, he's thankful to have escaped with his life.

The 13abc I-Team taking you to the experts tracking what's going into the Maumee River that's causing that Lake Erie algal bloom. Too much of the toxic algae triggered the "do not drink" order at the start of the August. The Maumee River is one of the lake's greatest water sheds, running more than 130 miles from Indiana through Ohio to the lake. Changes to it could make all the difference. One local university is at the forefront of tracking what's going into the river.
