Lake Superior is still holding ice

Posted: Updated:
There is still ice on Lake Superior. Just over 1% of the lake has ice, and it is all close to the southern shore near Picture Rocks National Lakeshore and areas to the west. According to computer model simulations, the ice is expected to melt slowly in the days to come. However, it will likely take another week before Lake Superior is 100% ice free. While not everyone agrees, a few forecasts have suggested that ice could stick around till the first day of summer or perhaps even early July at the latest. Since satellite records have been kept in 1980 there has never been this much ice left on the Great Lakes this late in the season. Ice did survive through early June along the southern shore back in 1996.
