Whitmer grad surprised at commencement ceremony

Posted: Updated:
Graduation is a special day for all students, but one Whitmer graduate had an extra surprise waiting for her at graduation.

Jessica Kowalski says she thought it was nice when they were paying tribute to servicemen around the world during her commencement.  Then they started talking about family around the world, and she says she started bawling her eyes out because she knew her brother wasn't going to be there. Then as soon as they started saying his name she says she was freaking out trying to find him.

Her brother, James Kowalski, says he found out just two days ago that he could make it home to see his little sister graduate.

James says, "I wasn't sure if I was going to be here, just trying to get the leave approved, and what not, and it's awesome to be here because I know it only happens once."

James says only his parents and in-laws knew he was coming to surprise his little sister.

James and Jessica are nine years apart, and now usually several thousand miles apart.

His trip home makes her high school graduation day even more memorable.
