Women urge caution with popular birth control

Posted: Updated:
The Essure birth control method promises permanent sterilization.  Tiny nickle coils are inserted into the fallopian tubes, prompting scar tissue to form around them, effectively blocking the tubes and preventing eggs from being released.  However some local women are part of a growing national group of dissatisfied patients who've had what they call serious complications from the procedure.  Dawn Jarrett and Melissa Crocker are recovering from what they describe as a physical nightmare.  Both women blame it on complications from the Essure birth control procedure. "I had weight gain, rashes, different bumps on my skin," says Dawn Jarrett.  "I was constantly tired, I'm like there's something wrong with me," added Melissa Crocker.   OB/GYN Dr. Lance Talmadge is in no way connected to Jarrett or Crocker.  Talmadge says, while he's successfully used the birth control method on a number of patients without complication.  However, Talmadge says, "Any patient with a nickle allergy" is not a good candidate for the procedure.  And that seems to have contributed to the complications experienced by Melissa Crocker.  "My allergist says any amount of something you are allergic to, will cause health problems." says Crocker.

13ABC reached out to Bayer Corporation, out of Germany with a request for information and reaction.  The company did not return out request to talk.  The FDA is investigating nearly one-thousand adverse reaction reports filed by women experiencing difficulties.  Their report so far says
"although there is evidence of complications, as there are with all medical devices, overall results from this study did not demonstrate any new problems or an increased incident of problems already known."

Both Crocker and Jarrett have had the coils removed.  However both had to travel to doctors in different cities to have the procedure done.  Both said, local doctors wouldn't perform the operation, they only offered the option of a total hysterectomy.  There are several face book forums for women to report problems, as well as a national internet forum set up by consumer activist Erin Brocovich.  Both women are also part of a growing legal case challenging the safety of the Essure birth control procedure.
