After earning a trip to the NAIA National Championship Opening Round in 2013, Lourdes University’s women’s volleyball team will take to the court for 32 regular season matches in 2014 as head coach Greg Reitz has announced this season’s Gray Wolves’ schedule.
The Gray Wolves will play 10 home matches at Tam-o-Shanter this season, including nine against Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference foes, as the league has changed to a double round-robin format, giving each school 22 conference matches this season.
Lourdes will open the season August 22-23 at the Aces in August Classic hosted by the University of Rio Grande. The Gray Wolves will play a total of four matches over the two days against opponents that have yet to be announced.
One week later Lourdes will travel to the Chicagoland area to participate in the Saint Xavier/Trinity International Crossover. Playing at Saint Xavier on August 29, the Gray Wolves will face Spring Arbor along with the host Cougars before the action shifts to Trinity International one day later where Lourdes will battle Saint Francis (Ill.) and Mount Mercy.
The 2014 home opener will also serve as the WHAC opener for the Gray Wolves as Marygrove visits Tam-o-Shanter on September 3. Conference play will continue for the next two months, with Lourdes hosting every league school with the exception of Madonna and Siena Heights.
With the new league format, three Saturday’s will consist of cluster matches, with two conference tilts taking place at the same school. Lourdes will travel to Siena Heights on October 18 to face the Saints and Madonna while heading to Davenport on November 8 to battle the Panthers and Aquinas.
Lourdes will host a cluster as well on November 1, which will mark the final home matches of the regular season. The Gray Wolves will entertain Cornerstone and Northwestern Ohio while Michigan-Dearborn will also be in town to face those two schools.
The 2014 WHAC tournament will take place on campus sites November 12-15. The regular season champion and the tournament champion will both earn automatic bids to the NAIA National Championships.
Lourdes returns 11 players from the 2013 squad that posted a 21-13 record overall and a 5-6 mark in WHAC play. The Gray Wolves tied for seventh in the league during the regular season before advancing to the WHAC tournament championship match.
