Toledo Museum turns gallery into video arcade

Posted: Updated:
Like it or not, video games are obviously a big part of our culture. You might not expect to see them in our world famous Toledo Museum of Art but they're the focus of an exhibition called "The Art of Video Games." From Super Mario Brothers to Pac-Man and Flower to The Secret of Monkey Island, they're all part of this new exhibit that takes a look back at video games through the last four decades.

It's set to open next week but tonight we give you an early look at what is expected to draw big crowds of all ages. Behind the gallery doors is a big slice of video game heaven. Crews are putting the finishing touches on it this week. This is the only Ohio stop for the touring exhibit from The Smithsonian American Art Museum. It's a look at the first forty yeas of the home console. Amy Gilman is an Associate Director and Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art. She says you'll see everything from Atari to Play Station 3," The exhibit is really looking at the progression of video games, not just from the technological standpoint but also the evolution of narratives, graphics, the complexity of story lines and the depth of the experimentation people were able to do within the video game context."

It features 80 of the best games from 20 different gaming systems. The games are presented through video footage and still images and you'll have a chance to play five games, "If you come as a family the kids can teach the parents the new games and the parents will be able to teach the kids the old school games so this will be fun and interactive for people of all ages."

If you'd like to learn more about video games and the Toledo Museum of Art, the hope is that this exhibit encourages you to come explore, "It's a fun way to get people in as a group, as a family and after they check out the exhibit we hope you go into the permanent galleries and rediscover your museum."

The Art of Video Games is free. It opens June 19 and runs through September 28th. In addition to the games there are also video interviews with some of the game developers and artists. There's also a big party to celebrate the new exhibit on June 21st. Click here to find out more.
