Antonio Taylor gets 35 years for murder, assault

Posted: Updated:
It's a crime that happened more than one year ago, but Wednesday morning, old wounds were once again open inside of the Lucas County Common Pleas Courthouse.

Judge Gene Zmuda sentenced Antonio Taylor to 35 years behind bars. The maximum was 37.

Last August, Taylor, who's 20, pleaded guilty to aggravated burglary, felonious assault and murder.

In April of last year, Toledo police say Taylor and two teenagers walked into a house party at the Oakwood Apartments on Dorr near Reynolds.

Judge Zmuda said they were looking for pot and money.

Taylor admitted to shooting Michael Kohlhofer Jr., who was 19 at the time, in the leg and shooting and killing Nathaniel Phillips, who was 21.

"I ask that mercy be given to him, even though he took the life of my son.," said Bridget Holland, the mother of Nathaniel Phillips. "At first, I was devastated, you know? Revenge was in my soul, you know? But I don't find that today. I find inner peace and I go on with my life.

Meantime, Taylor's mother did not want to speak on camera, but she is asking the family of Nathaniel Phillips to forgive him, and says that her son is not a monster.

The other two suspects, Cody Ramsay and Levi Jackson, were both 17 at the time.

Ramsay is serving two years in juvenile detention.  Jackson is serving twelve behind bars.
