Vietnam vets finally get welcome home they missed

Posted: Updated:
The traveling Vietnam Memorial stopped in our area on Saturday. It was set up on Clinton Street in Defiance.

Organizers like veteran Dan Wilder say they worked hard to bring it to their town. "We're kind of sad to see it go. Because it's like waiting for your child to be born and not it's gonna go away. People were very giving. It was not any problem raising the funds for it."

The scaled-down version of the memorial in Washington D.C. drew a lot of traffic on Flag Day.

Vietnam Army Vet J.D. Grimm appreciated the support. "The people that showed up, a lot of respect, a lot of respect from everybody from the Veterans to the Vietnam guys. All the civilians that came out to support - couldn't ask for a better group."

Father John Stites is also a Vietnam vet. he led the welcome ceremony. "It's moving we didn't get a welcome when we came home, so it's kinda great to see them respect the guys that gave the ultimate sacrifice."

Each vet picked up a stone, the same kind of stone the Memorial in D.C. is made from, and took it to the wall to share a moments with their brother vets to honor the fallen.

The wall remain on display at Defiance College through the day on Sunday and will them hit the road once again and travel to Elgin, Nebraska.
