Americans play in flooded Natal

Posted: Updated:

Before the Americans dive into World Cup play, they've had to dodge a deluge before their own gauntlet.  More than a foot of rain fell on Natal, the city in northern Brazil.  The Associated Press reported flooded streets, dozens of damaged buildings and even a landslide.
Many of us think about Brazil's Amazon Rain Forest but this coastal city has a different climate.  True, winter starts Saturday but Natal is more sub-tropical.

My Portuguese isn't the greatest, but after doing the math on the national website, I found that local rain gauges picked up more than fourteen inches of rain since last Thursday.  That's nearly double the average amount for all of June.

Rain is in tonight's forecast but weather technology is rare.  Most of Brazil's few modern radars are down south, near the big cities like Rio and Sao Paulo.

An Internet video purports to show the beheading of U.S. journalist Steven Sotloff by the Islamic State group. Sotloff, who freelanced for Time and Foreign Policy magazines, had last been seen in Syrian in August 2013 until he appeared in a video released online last month by the Islamic State group that showed the beheading of fellow American journalist James Foley.
