Toledo unveils major makeover of Fire Station 3

Posted: Updated:
Toledo's Fire Station 3 served our city for decades before it was closed. Today there was a celebration to mark the renovated building. Station 3 was closed in 2012 because of major cracks in the floors It will be back in service sometime this summer, but there is no official start date at this point. The station has served North Toledo for more than 80 years. This morning neighbors, city leaders and members of the Toledo Fire Department gathered for the rededication ceremony.

As you may remember we didn't get to this day without a bit of controversy. Initially city leaders did not want to renovate the building saying it wasn't cost effective. Original estimates pegged repairs at about 1.8 million, but it ended up costing about 3 million to save this piece of history. Neighbors fought hard to have the building saved.
The city bought adjacent land to build two bays to house fire equipment and the building itself will be living quarters.

There is a memorial plaque honoring Privates Stephen Machcinski and James Dickman. The two firemen from engine 3 were killed in the line of duty earlier this year.
Their families were on hand for today's ceremony.
