Peak season for Strawberries

Posted: Updated:
Strawberry season is at its peak in the year. Johnston Fruit Farms in Swanton, Ohio, is one of several farms in the area that allows people to pick their own strawberries. Marsha Mora the second generation to run the family fruit farm. She says the berries made it through a tough winter. "Even though we had temperatures around twenty below zero, the berries were covered with snow. The snow acted as a protective blanket, so they came through the winter just fine." According to the Michigan State University Extension office, strawberry crops around southeast Michigan and northwest Ohio are in good shape and the berries are above average in size.

Hundreds of people have been combing through the strawberry patch, pulling out flats of berries. Gage Eberly and his fiance Emily Spectka, of Columbus, Ohio, visited the strawberry field to start a new family tradition. "I've come out here when I was younger with my grandma and she can no longer come out and we just thought we would make it our little tradition family," says Emily. Gage picked strawberries for the first time and said he really liked getting outside with Emily.

Johnston Fruit Farm plants the strawberries in the spring time to be fertilized and prepared for the summer season. People can usually begin picking strawberries in June. The farm's season ends in July and they begin to prepare for the next season. Their strawberries are $1.35 per pound.
