Night-time storms explained

Posted: Updated:

Deadly tornadoes led the charge of Monday's severe weather outbreak.  This is the video (attached) you'll remember for years to come.  Dueling tornadoes with massive debris clouds steam-rolling parts of Pilger, Nebraska.   Reports from the rubble show about half the town gone in the aftermath.  The town's roughly 350 people were evacuated.

Those Spinning Sisters weren't isolated.  It's all part of a massive complex of storms that brought damage overnight to parts of Wisconsin and Michigan and record flooding just a few miles up the road from Pilger, in South Dakota.

"It started this afternoon when it started raining and I watched the water rise through the ditch and now it's almost to the building," Worthing, South Dakota landscaper Cole Weller said.  "We bought all the sandbags we could buy.  I don't know how many
it was but hopefully it's enough to keep the water out."

We often think of thunderstorms as afternoon weather but these overnight complexes of storms are fairly common in late spring.
It's powered by what we call the "low level jet."   Simply put, it's a funnel of Gulf moisture that acts like a super-charger for night-time storms.

After our brutal winter, our typical severe weather season got off to a stunted start.  Through May, it was easily one of the quietest tornado stretches in decades.

June brought a dramatic shift, though.  Halfway through the month, we've already eclipsed an average full month.
