Winter road salt expensive but delivered

Posted: Updated:
A lot of Toledoans are trying to forget the harsh, recording breaking winter.  But next winter could be worse so local road crews are getting ready.

On the first hot day of the what will soon be summer, most people would rather not talk about the winter.

Jami Baker of Perrysburg told 13abc reporter Bill Hormann, “It was bitterly cold and we just couldn’t wait for summer to come.”

But that bitterly cold winter is something we need to think about this summer.

A lot of towns ran dangerously low on salt, but in Perrysburg, they stocked up early.

The town just received a delivery of 2,500 tons of salt; another 2,500 are on reserve…

Summer is not a time to take a break.

Rick Toepfer is the Deputy Director for Perrysburg’s Department of Public Service.  He says, “We wanted to plan ahead, we wanted to be ready for it.  While other people are planning a rip to the beach or going to Cedar Point, this is what I look forward to this summer.”

Lucas and Wood counties are paying more for salt this year.

This year’s demand pushed the price from $32 a ton to $45 a ton, so Perrysburg’s 5,000 ton order will cost an extra $65,000.

In Maumee, winter did a number as well.

The town’s Public Service director, Joe Camp, says, “It’s very demanding; it’s hard on the equipment. It’s hard on the manpower.”

And it was hard on the salt supply.  There is very little left.  Only 100 tons of salt are in the dome but it was borrowed from Oregon, last winter.  Now, Maumee has to give it back and they’re really hoping it doesn’t snow in July.

Maumee has ordered 5,000 tons and should get the first shipment by August.

Camp adds, “I do not want to go through another winter like we did last year.”

No one does… but the best way to prevent another winter like last year’s is to prepare in the summer

Toledo has ordered 60,000 tons of salt costing an extra $600,000 over the year before.  But that’s the price you pay when you suffer a bad winter.

So, enjoy the summer; you’ve earned it.
