Pistol-whipped store clerk after robbery suspect arrest: “I thank every cop in Toledo”

Posted: Updated:
Toledo convenience store clerks are breathing a sigh of relief.

Police have charged two men in connection to a string of armed robberies this month.

One suspect is in jail. The other is still on the run.

Police have named 25-year-old Dajuan Willingham and 24-year-old Leroy Alcorn, both from Toledo, as the suspected South Toledo carry-out robbers.

"It's a huge relief that they caught somebody,” says Geri Trzonkowski, a regular customer at the Stop & Go on Western Avenue where a clerk allegedly got into a shoot-out with the suspects.

"I just thank every cop in Toledo,” says Steve, the clerk who was allegedly pistol-whipped by the suspects at the Cigarette Outlet on Airport Highway.

"They're violent guys,” says Sgt. Joe Heffernan. “I'm glad we've got one in custody. Still need to get the other one."

Officers arrested Willingham. A judge set his bond at $400,000 on Thursday morning.

Police are still searching for Alcorn.

The men are accused of robbing at gunpoint two South Toledo locations within the last few weeks and assaulting those clerks, although many more similar attacks have occurred in the same area over the last few months.

"We may have more charges filed as the investigation comes on, but we believe that these two are the main perpetrators of these rash of South End robberies,” says Sgt. Heffernan.

On June 1st, police say Willingham and Alcorn robbed the Cigarette Outlet on Airport Highway and Westwood attacking the employee behind the counter.

"He hit me with his gun and I get six stitches in my face,” says Steve, who was the clerk that night.

He doesn’t want to show his face on camera or give his last name.

"It's getting too dangerous,” says Steve.

Then on June 10th there was a shoot-out at the Stop & Go on Western and Spencer.

Willingham and Alcorn allegedly fired a gun at the clerk.

The clerk shot back at the suspects.  No one was injured.

"They had customers held back in the back and the guys jumped right over the counter. I know that it was definitely scary,” says Trzonkowski.

Willingham is due back in court in one week.  Investigators are asking anyone who knows the whereabouts of Alcorn to call police.
