Local shelter gets creative to find homes for cats

Posted: Updated:

It's a full house at the Wood County Humane Society. Lots of new dogs and cats are coming into the shelter but summer is typically slow when it comes to adoptions. So shelter leaders are coming up with creative ways to find forever homes. The latest deal is two cats or kittens for just $50.

A typical day at the shelter is made up of plenty of cat naps, play time and grooming. Erin McKibben is the shelter manager, "This time of year is busy for just about every rescue group out there." There are only about a dozen dogs and puppies at the shelter but there are dozens of cats. Cassie Williams is part of the animal care staff, "We are the only agency in Wood County that takes cats. They reproduce frequently and have large litters. They can get pregnant as young as four to six months old so its babies having babies, having babies."

Kitten season was delayed a bit by the long winter but it is now in full swing. Many of the kittens are in foster care right now, however they will be coming to the shelter soon. So Williams says they're hoping the two for $50 special will help find homes for many of these cats, "We get multiple calls daily from people who find kittens or stray cats with kittens. Others need to find homes for their existing animals. The problem is that the shelters are full to the brim right now."

McKibben says there is only one way to stop the problem,"Spaying and neutering your pet before they can reproduce is key." Volunteers are a big part of the operation and they're looking for more foster homes. All it takes is time and love, Williams says the humane society handles the rest, "We provide all the food, medical care, supplies and the education."

In the midst of the busy season McKibben says it's the end result that keeps everyone motivated, "When we take animals in they are often sick, injured, malnourished and they may not have had someone to love them. The reward for us is watching them grow, recover and find their forever home."

Even though they are offering a deal on cats and kittens this month, you still have to go through an application and screening process. All of the dogs and cats at the shelter are fixed, have their shots and a microchip. To learn how you can volunteer, donate or adopt from the Wood County Humane Society, click here.
