Closed part of Michigan prison opening as museum

BLACKMAN TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - Part of the former Southern Michigan Correctional Facility in the Jackson area is opening Saturday as a home for history.

The Ella Sharp Museum of Art and History partnered with the Michigan Department of Corrections to create the prison museum within the 7 Block portion of the prison that closed in 2007. The Jackson Citizen Patriot reports (http://bit.ly/1l6s2Rx ) a preview was held Monday.

Corrections Director Dan Heyns formerly served as Jackson County sheriff and was a longtime member of the sheriff's department before taking his current job with the prison system in 2011. He says the museum "marks Jackson's acceptance of its history."

The Southern Michigan Correctional Facility had operated in some capacity since the 1930s. The 7 Block potion was including in prison tours from 2011-13.

    A temporary fence is now in place around a private pond in Perrysburg. That's after an elderly man somehow fell into the water and died. It happened last week, at the senior living center "Saint Clare Commons."Rescue crews recovered the body of John Voland, along with a motorized wheelchair. Voland, who was 94, lived at the facility. The director tells 13abc the temporary fence will stay up until the completion of the internal investigation and the one by police.
