Akiean Frederick, a 6'7" forward/center from Franklin Heights, has signed a letter of intent to become the latest member of the 2014-15 Owens Community College men's basketball recruiting class.
Frederick, who grew three to four inches in the summer prior to last season, averaged 18.5 points and 7.8 rebounds as a senior. He scored at least 23 points in four of his final five games and reached double figures in scoring every game but one.
Frederick's best game of the year was a 32 point, 18 rebound, four assist performance on Jan. 29. He also had 29 points and 17 rebounds on Feb. 14. He added six double-doubles, as well, during the season.
"We really like him a lot," said Owens men's basketball assistant coach Keith Raine. "He's 6'7" and still a bit of a project, perhaps, but his upside is huge. He put up big, big numbers his senior year and he's got some serious upside."
Aside from his stats, Frederick was named a Central Ohio Top 10 Division I player and participated in the Jump 25 All Star Classic.
Frederick joins Darren Groves, a 6'8" forward/center from Dayton (OH) Thurgood Marshall, C.J. Bussey, a 6'1" guard from Toledo (OH) Central Catholic High School and Justin Baker, a 5'7" point guard from Indianapolis (IN) Cathedral as one of four members of next year's class. Bussey will be a sophomore as he is transferring from NCAA Division II Carson-Newman University.
