Automakers, union leaders push for new bridge

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (AP) - A number of major automakers and union leaders are asking President Barack Obama to help move along plans for a new bridge connecting Detroit and Windsor, Ontario.

The Economic Alliance for Michigan says representatives of General Motors, Ford and Chrysler along with the United Auto Workers union and the Michigan AFL-CIO sent a joint letter Friday to the White House asking for funding for a roughly $250 million U.S. Customs inspection plaza.

Other businesses and groups signed onto the letter.

The U.S. Coast Guard in June issued a key permit needed for construction of the bridge. Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder and Canada are trying to build the bridge over the Detroit River that would compete with the Ambassador Bridge. Property on both sides of the border also must be secured.
