Armed robbery suspect arrested in Wood Co. after search

Posted: Updated:
PEMBERVILLE, Ohio - The Wood County Sheriff's Office tells us suspect Matthew Stoughton has been arrested.

Stoughton was taken into custody shortly after a massive manhunt for him was called off.

Police say he robbed Jak's Pharmacy in Bowling Green at gunpoint around 9:15 Monday money for prescription drugs.  Workers told police they gave him what he was asking for, and that they had seen the suspect before when he came in as a patient.

"The robbery that happened this morning was an armed robbery," deputy chief Tony Hetrick with the Bowling Green Police Department told the media on Monday. "We presume he did have a handgun."

After the robbery, officers identified the suspect as Stoughton and waited at his house until they got a search warrant. Before the warrant arrived, Stoughton came home. He fled in his car, leading police on a chase that ended in a crash shortly after 10:30 a.m. near Bradner and Eisenhour near Pemberville.

Officers say Stoughton then jumped out of his car and fled on foot into a cornfield.

Larry Kreais lives in the area, and witnessed Stoughton being arrested near Bradner Road and Kahler Road around 6 p.m. Monday.  When asked he if ever thought he was in danger, Kreais says no.

"I assumed he was going to leave the area and try to make it a different direction," he told 13abc.  "I figured he was too busy trying to sneak away and I actually live in town so I didn't think he would try to sneak through Bradner."

Police brought in helicopters, K-9 units and the SWAT team to search for him. Authorities searched more than 100 acres of farmland throughout the day.
