Thief steals money from youth football team

Posted: Updated:
Some Toledo kids are starting over raising money for their football team, after a thief took that money, literally right from their hands.

It all happened Tuesday near the corner of Detroit and Nebraska in Central Toledo.  The kids say they were just trying to help pay for some basics for their football team like water bottles and footballs.  A thief has kept them from both.

Players for the Colts had been collecting in jars for the past few days, including Tuesday morning when a young man came up to them with money in his hand.  Instead of dropping the money in, the person grabbed the jar and took off.  That thief was tracked to some homes near Detroit and Hawley, when the jar was dumped but the money was gone.

Certainly frustrating for the kids working hard for new equipment.

“I was shocked because they just took the money and ran," said Colts player Marcos Deluca.

"They get some other guy who's just a little bit older and he's with a group of kids himself so he thought he'd be the tough guy and snatch it right out of their hands," said Toledo police Sergeant Pete Lavey.

The kids are guessing they lost about $30.  One of the kids says he recognized the thief, so the hope is with that and some fingerprints on the jar, that police can solve this case.
