Somerfield Becomes Second Transfer To Ink With Owens Men's Basketball

Austin Somerfield, a transfer from Grand Valley State University, has signed with the Owens Community College men's basketball team.
The 2012 Greenville (Mich.) High School graduate played one year at Grand Valley before attending Grand Rapids (Mich.) Community College last year, where he only attended school and didn't play.
As a senior at Greenville, Somerfield averaged 16.5 points, 9.5 rebounds, 1.5 steals, 1.2 blocks and one assist per game, while shooting 60 percent from the field and 74 percent from the foul line. He led his team to a 19-2 record and an OK White conference championship. He was named Second Team All-Area in Grand Rapids and Honorable Mention All-Michigan.
As a junior, he averaged 8.9 points and five rebounds per game in a 15-7 season.
In limited playing time as a freshman at Grand Valley, he averaged 1.2 points. He did, however, shoot 9-for-16 (56.3 percent) from the field.
Somerfield becomes the sixth member, and second sophomore transfer, of the 2014-15 Owens men's basketball recruiting class. He joins Peter Firlik (6'3" guard from Grand Rapids Catholic Central), Akiean Frederick(6'7" forward from Columbus Franklin Heights), Darren Groves (6'8" forward from Dayton Thurgood Marshall), CJ Bussey (6'1" guard from Toledo Central Catholic) and Justin Baker (5'7" point guard from Indianapolis Cathedral).
The Owens Community College men's basketball team finished 25-6 overall last year, including an 11-1 mark in the Ohio Community College Athletic Conference (OCCAC). They earned a share of the their first OCCAC regular season championship since 2002-03 and came within a buzzer beating shot of advancing to the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II National Tournament for the second straight season.
