Toledo's First Bilingual School opens this Fall

Posted: Updated:

There's a new charter school in town, a first of it's kind.  Toledo Smart Elementary school or (TSES) is Toledo's first bilingual school opening this fall. Local Latino leaders like Robert Torres have been working for 15 years to open a school like this one.  He tells 13abc, "We want to welcome all Toledoans to experience education from a multicultural prospective truly multicultural in culture and in language. "

Toledo Smart is a K-2nd grade school that will teach core subjects in Spanish and English--giving individual attention to the personal needs of students. This school is not just for Spanish speaking students--but for any student seeking to pick up a dual language.

Brandon Godzik is the project manager of Toledo Smart. He says there are similar schools in Columbus and Dayton that show growth and academic success.

He believes Toledo smart will be no different. Donray Bennett is an administrator at a bilingual academy in Columbus.

He says once language is no longer a barrier academic success always follows. He tells 13abc, "We had a student that was identified as needing remedial services and after doing some bilingual assessing we found that the student was actually advance but simply had no background in the English language."

Whether your child is fluent in Spanish or English, the goal of this school is to help students master both languages. Giving students an edge and the best of both cultures. TSES is tuition free and will cater to families in South Toledo and East Toledo.

Transportation will be provided in the fall as well. An open house will be held Saturday July 12th from 11 am to 2 pm. It's located at 18-50 airport highway. For more information call 419-276-0605.
