Train traffic resumes after Springfield Township derailment

Posted: Updated:
Norfolk Southern freight is once again rolling through Springfield Township at the Crissey Road crossing near Old Airport Highway one day after 16 cars derailed spilling sand and vegetable oil, as well as tearing apart newly installed steel rail.

"Thank goodness nobody was hurt,” says Mike Jan of Erie, MI.

Jan, his wife, and their dog took a detour to the site on their Independence Day trip.

“We're on our way up to the lake in Indiana and we heard about the wreck,” says Jan. “I just wanted to stop and see it."

Ann Zakorczennyj of Texas viewed what’s left of the mess aboard an Amtrak train.  The derailment delayed her arrival in Toledo to visit family for the Fourth of July.

Zakorczennyj was stuck on her passenger train in Chicago for six hours until the NS tracks reopened at the Crissey crossing.

“I’m tired and crabby!" says Zakorczennyj at the Downtown Toledo Amtrak Station.

Her Amtrak train departs the station heading to Buffalo.  It’s estimated to arrive up to eight hours late.

"There's people that have plans for tonight that are saying they're not going to make them,” says Zakorczennyj.

Meanwhile, the rail repair crews are working through the holiday to help the wheels of commerce catch up on delayed deliveries.

"Those guys are amazing,” says Jan. “They do a heck of a job."

A spokesperson for Norfolk Southern says the cause of the derailment remains under investigation.

Crissey Road remains closed to car traffic between Old Airport Highway and Geiser Road.  The Springfield Township Fire Chief estimates it could be closed for up to a week.
