Lake water quality looking good for holiday weekend

Posted: Updated:
Jet skis are making lots of waves and the kayaks are cutting right through them today on the Maumee Bay.  Dozens of families taking advantage of the long weekend and the perfect weather

"The water is beautiful," says Doug Balzano. He and his wife Kay live in Cleveland and they were on our way home from Wisconsin and stopped at the Maumee Bay Resort.

"Look at this view. You can't get this anywhere too much around here."

The water here hasn't always been beautiful. The Maumee bay has been plagued with alerts and advisories because of high algae and bacteria counts.

Jim and Elaine potter are from Indiana and their daughter Anna is from Sylvania. She organizes the family summer get together at the Bay each year. She says, " Last year we just came for the day because we live so close and it was green and really really green and this year it is so clear. It is just beautiful."

The alert sign on the beach is at normal levels but there are other waterways around Northwest Ohio that are under advisories like Edson Creek, Bayview East, Chappel Creek and Vermillion Beach. If your lake or waterway has an advisory it just means there's too much bad bacteria in the water. And it could make the little guys in the big guys sick. But here in the mommy Bay the water is great.

But Ann's sister Emily says they are glad they are back this year again. "It's fantastic this year and it looks really great and the water is really the probably the best we've seen it in the last few years."
