Toledo OHP post issues 578 tickets for holiday traffic blitz so far

Posted: Updated:
Troopers are keeping busy over the holiday weekend with a special traffic blitz aimed at cutting down on fatalities over the three-day weekend.

Troopers with the Toledo Post of the Ohio Highway Patrol have issued 578 traffic tickets since Thursday. So far 160 of those were for seatbelt violations as well as 26 OVI arrests.

Sgt. Robert Sellers says, "It's most definitely a higher than usual number. It reflects our commitment to traffic safety, the extra staffing and the over time hours that we're putting on the roadways to make everybody safe."
Manpower is doubled at posts all across the state. Here at the Toledo Post, the usual two or three crews a shift has been boosted to six. They are looking for all types of violations: speeders, red light violations and, most importantly impaired drivers.

Crews are paying extra attention to high-risk areas based on previous crash statistics.
According to Sellers, "We know where the hotspots are."

Sellers says his top citations are failure to yield and seatbelt violations. "The safety belt is the number one thing you can do to protect yourself from personal injury and it's amazing that people still don't want to put it on."

The blitz continues through Sunday.
