Five teenagers arrested for vandalizing TPS School

Posted: Updated:

Five teenagers are facing charges for vandalizing a Toledo Public School.

According to Toledo Police, five teenagers were arrested overnight after smashing multiple windows at Robinson Elementary School and lighting two dumpsters on fire.

This morning, cleaning staff were also cleaning off graffiti spray painted on the backside of the school.

Parents in the area are frustrated that young kids are spending their summer bringing down the area.

Carolynn Simms attended Robinson as a child and still lives in the area. Her nephew attends TPS and she is working hard to keep him away from the streets.

"I need him to stay focused and get an education," says Simms.

Toledo Public Schools Chief Business Manager Jim Gant says they have anywhere from three to seven instances of vandalism at schools throughout the district each year. Repair costs vary and Gant says it's frustrating when the district is already working with such a tight budget to pay for programs for students and are then forced to make avoidable repairs.

The teenagers are all facing charges of arson. One is facing a second charge of criminal damaging for breaking a window. They are being held in the juvenile justice center.
