Cleveland to rock GOP 2016 convention

Posted: Updated:
The Republican National Committee will hold its 2016 convention in Cleveland, Ohio, it announced Tuesday.

You do not win presidential elections by simply choosing to hold a convention in a particular city.

After all, Mitt Romney's choice of Tampa, Florida did nothing for him in 2012.

"You have to win ohio to win the presidency."

But Republicans, like Lucas County party chairman Jon Stainbrook see a connection between a convention and a presidential victory.

Republicans have lost Ohio *and* the last two presidential races so choosing Cleveland sends a message.  Stainbrook says,
"The convention in the state you have to win is just huge."

"Getting the convention isn't a partisan issue."

Ohio Lieutenant governor Mary Taylor (R) doesn't want to get political about the convention pick.

She's proud the state-- and Cleveland in particular-- will host it's first national political convention since 19-36.

But 2016 will be a time to showcase the Republican agenda she says has worked well in Ohio.

Taylor told 13abc's Bill Hormann, "We've cut taxes, we've balanced our budget, we have a surplus, our credit outlook is good in Ohio."

But those are arguments you may hear from a party's a presidential candidate.

Without an incumbent running the conventions, and the campaigns, will be crucial.

However, in the end, the site of that candidate's nomination will not be important.
