Mercy Memorial wants to join Promedica Health Systems

Posted: Updated:

Mercy Memorial Hospital in Monroe is one of the last standing independent hospitals in the region.  But those days are numbered.  Both healthcare systems signed a letter of intent to join forces.

Mercy Memorial employs just under 2-thousand people.  It's a financially stable independent hospital.  However, it lost 12 million dollars in reimbursement last year. Mercy President and CEO Annette Phillips says "there's no way the hospital can take that kind of financial hit year after year." "It's exciting to become part of Promedica, because we can grow our clinical services here at Mercy."

Currently Mercy doesn't offer a lot of the specialized medical care patients need.  They often end up going North to Detroit or Ann Arbor or South to Toledo for treatment.

The move, if approved by both boards, will allow some of those services to be offered at Mercy Memorial.  The agreement allows both sides to work things out legally, and if accepted, Mercy Memorial will become part of Promedica in around 4 months.
