Scherzer outduels Greinke; Tigers top Dodgers 4-1

DETROIT (AP) - Max Scherzer pitched seven impressive innings, outdueling Zack Greinke and helping the shorthanded Detroit Tigers beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 4-1 on Wednesday.

Detroit was without sluggers Miguel Cabrera and Victor Martinez, but the AL Central-leading Tigers scored two runs in the first inning against Greinke, and Scherzer made the lead hold up. The All-Star right-hander allowed a run and four hits. He struck out seven and walked two.

Joba Chamberlain struck out two in the eighth, and Joe Nathan fanned two in a perfect ninth for his 18th save in 23 chances.

Greinke allowed three runs and seven hits in seven innings. He struck out eight without a walk.

Miguel Rojas of the Dodgers hit his first career homer in the fifth.

OBIT-VERYZER

Former major league SS Tom Veryzer dies

DETROIT (AP) - Tom Veryzer, who played a dozen years in the major leagues and was Detroit's shortstop before Alan Trammell took over in the late 1970s, has died. He was 61.

The Tigers confirmed Veryzer died this week, as did the Overton Funeral Home in Islip, N.Y. A viewing is scheduled for Thursday at the home.

Veryzer played for the Tigers from 1973-77, then spent four years with Cleveland. He played one season with the New York Mets and two with the Chicago Cubs to finish his career.

He played 996 games and batted .241 for his career. In his final season, he was part of the Chicago team that won the NL East in 1984.

He is survived by his wife, Vivian, and three children, Thomas, William and Jennifer.

FIGHTING BLIGHT-HEARNS

Thomas Hearns joins effort to fight Detroit blight

DETROIT (AP) - Boxing great Thomas "Hitman" Hearns has joined an effort to fight blight in the Detroit neighborhood where he grew up.

Hearns took part Wednesday in an effort to clean up a section of Helen Street near East Grand Boulevard on the city's east side.

The campaign involves people picking up trash, remove brush and paint over graffiti.

A number of others have helped put together the cleanup along with Repair the World Detroit, a Jewish volunteer organization.

The city of Detroit has worked for years to deal with blight, including vacant homes and buildings, and thousands of structures have been razed.

PHILLIES-BREWERS

Hernandez cruises, Phillies beat Brewers 4-1

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Jimmy Rollins and Chase Utley homered to support Roberto Hernandez's solid start, and the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Milwaukee Brewers 4-1 on Wednesday night for their third straight win over the NL Central leaders.

Hernandez needed just 84 pitches in eight innings to dispatch the aggressive Brewers, who have lost four straight and eight of nine. Hernandez allowed three hits, and Jonathan Papelbon pitched a perfect ninth for his 22nd save.

Veterans Rollins and Utley homered off Kyle Lohse, who at one point retired 13 straight batters after Utley's first-inning solo shot.

But Lohse gave up a leadoff single to Cameron Rupp in the sixth before Rollins hit a 2-1 hanging curve with two outs over the wall in right field for a two-run lead.
