Portman on presidential shortlist following RNC announcement

Posted: Updated:
WASHINGTON, DC - Sen. Rob Portman’s (R-OH) name is back on the shortlist for a potential nomination as president in 2016, on the heels of the Republican National Committee’s selection of Cleveland as the hosting city of the GOP convention.

Portman told 13ABC that he’s considering a run for the White House, but that he’ll make his final decision after this November’s primary election. For now, his plans are to keep his current seat as senator.

“I'm planning to run for the Senate in Ohio and hoping I'll have a chance to represent the great state for six years,” Portman said.

With a smile and a nod, the senator was guarded on camera - but explained he’ll be weighing the decision seriously. Especially if a strong Republican candidate doesn’t emerge.

“If I don't see people who are stepping up to run who can help change the direction of the country, which is in trouble, I might consider it,” Portman said.

This speculation isn’t new for Portman. Back in 2012, Portman was vetted as a possible vice presidential candidate for then-presidential contender Mitt Romney.

Now, he’s a senator who helped his state get the chance to host one of the most important Republican conventions in modern times.

“We were not at the top of the list, but when people actually visited Cleveland, and they saw what the real Cleveland is like, they were really impressed,” Portman said. “I must say some of them were surprised and impressed and I think that’s really terrific.”

Portman says whether he runs for president or not – he’s dedicated to Ohio – all the way.
