Toledo council members want warring gangs to stop violence

Posted: Updated:
A string of shootings on the streets of toledo has city council members calling on the community to stop the violence.

"There's some issues here that have to be attacked by a lot of different groups not just the police," said Toledo city councilman Jack Ford.

Since Sunday Toledo's had multiple shootings and two murders. It appears to the community the violence is getting worse. Toledo police say the number of shootings are down.

Officers say from January of 2012 to July 5, of 2012 Toledo police had 270 shootings. They had 223 the same time last year. This year they've had 174.

David Poston lives in the inner city and says he hears gunshots all the time. He says some folks are afraid to get involved

"It kind of scares you when you think about it because you can't do what you like to do because you're afraid of what would happen. These young kids are (inaudible)," said citizen David Poston.

"I would be willing to help them in anyway I can to stop some of this that's going on," said citizen Willie Watts.

Councilman ford called on black youth to consider the impact that the violence is having on inner city neighborhoods. Many of the shootings have been black on black crimes.

"I think it's lack of gainful employment that is something we need to start working on," said Theresa Gabriel Toledo city councilwoman.

"It's not about guns its about culture. Its about how people are taught to solve problems and these are things we need to address," said Mike Craig Toledo city councilman.

"We have to better educate our kids and we have to give them a sense of hope they have a future and without that we will continue to see the violent acts," said Tyrone Riley Toledo city councilman.

City council members say they know this appeal means nothing to some people. They believe it is worth it if only one gang member puts their gun down and one life is saved
