Bikers keep fallen detective's memory alive

Posted: Updated:
TPD Detective Keith Dressel was gunned down on the job nearly eight years ago, but he has not been forgotten.

On Saturday, 200 motorcyclists participated in a ride to honor his memory and raise money for a scholarship fund.

Sgt. Kelly Kriner of the Lucas County Sheriff's Office has taken part in this ride every year. "We want to honor Keith's memory and all the other fallen officers. I marvel at how many bikes show up for this every year and how many people participate."

Dressel was shot and killed on Ontario Street in 2007 while trying to arrest a teenager. Many of the riders didn't know him personally, but still came to show support.

Firefighter Wayne Hartford said the loss of two members of TFD inspired him to show his support for TPD. "We lost two brothers recently and we got a lot of support recently from Toledo Police and surrounding areas. So this is a little payback to them."

The money raised goes towards a scholarship at Owens Community College for future police officers. Dressel's mother, Larraine Dressel said, "For this to give scholarships to young people going to school... It's a good thing, something that Keith would be proud of."
