Teens learn what it takes to be a first responder at disaster drill

Posted: Updated:
Teens and young adults learned what it really takes to be a first responder on Saturday.

Rossford Fire and Rescue's Explorer Post 790 held a mock disaster day. Teens who are interested in become first responders took part in simulated emergencies at the Owens Community College Center for Emergency Preparedness.

It's all part of the Explorers program affiliated with the Boy Scouts that's open to all young adults from ages 14 thru 21.

Advisors give the teens a chance to try out all aspects of the job with the exception of driving the vehicles. Simulated fire calls ranged from mock car accidents to structure fires to injured victims.  Police calls ranged from traffic stops to hostage situations.

Rossford Firefighter Patrick Yoder says the Explorers program inspired him to become a firefighter.

The Maumee River is one of the lake's greatest water sheds, running more than 130 miles from Indiana through Ohio to the lake. Changes to it could make all the difference. One local university is at the forefront of tracking what's going into the river.
