Former Clay HS athletic trainer sentenced to year in prison for sex with student

Posted: Updated:
Melinda Rober, the former Clay high school trainer who pleaded no contest to having sex with a student, was sentenced to one year in prison on Monday morning.

Last month, Rober agreed to a plea deal with prosecutors.

36-year-old Melinda Rober pleaded no contest to having sex with a Clay High School student.  A judge found her guilty on two counts of sexual battery.  Her attorney says Rober is remorseful and accepts what she did wrong.

Rober will be required to register as a sex offender for the rest of her life.

At the time of the allegations, Rober was employed by Promedica as an athletic trainer. Prosecutors say if this case would have gone to trial, they would have proved Rober had sexual relations with the student on different occasions at Clay high school in the locker room and at his home.

In court on Monday, Rober and her attorney made statements to Judge Gary Cook saying at the time, Rober was depressed, going through problems in her marriage, and acting out sexually.

Through tears, Rober said, “I have been part of the Oregon community for almost 12 years. And I want to apologize to the school and the community because they were part of my extended family.”

The judge could have sentenced Rober to probation or up to ten years in prison.
