Standoff in Toledo ends with an arrest

Posted: Updated:

A routine traffic stop in Toledo tonight, ended with tear gas and the SWAT team.

Toledo police say around 4:30pm, officers stopped a vehicle on Edgebrook Road.  The officer talked to the driver, 50-year-old Bruce Maag,  believed he was intoxicated and asked him to get out of the car.

That's when police say Maag took off.

The officer followed him to Brock Street where the suspect crashed into his neighbor's yard.  Police say Maag ran inside 3138 Brock Dr.

Police tried to make contact with him and when he wouldn't come out, they called in a negotiator who talked to the man for more than an hour.

Around 7:30pm, officers fired tear gas into the house and not long after that, the suspect came out and surrendered.  Police say charges are pending.

Residents of a small Canadian island are being warned not to drink their well water because of potentially toxic algae in Lake Erie. The blue-green algae blooms causing the warning are the same stuff that contaminated the drinking water of about 400,000 people in the Toledo area earlier this month.
