Head men’s basketball coach Andre’ Smith has announced that E.J. Blackwell has transferred to Lourdes University and will play for the Gray Wolves beginning with the 2014-2015 season.
A guard from Rochester, Pa., Blackwell helped lead Community College of Beaver County to a 25-4 record last season and a Western Pennsylvania Collegiate Conference title. Blackwell averaged 16.4 points, 5.4 assists, and 5.4 rebounds per game for the Titans, shooting 49.7% from the floor, including 41.1% from three-point range. In addition, Blackwell shot 84.6% from the free throw line and scored a season-high 34 points against Mercyhurst North East. He tallied 25 double figure scoring contests and had three double figure assist games.
“E.J. is an athletic guard that can score in several ways,” Smith stated. He will defend his opponent’s best scoring guard and will be counted on to bring some scoring from the guard spot. E.J. is a tough, physical guard with experience that will add much needed depth to our perimeter.”
Blackwell played his freshman year at Genesee Community College, where he averaged 14.4 points, 5.9 assists, and 4.1 rebounds per game for the Cougars. He tallied 22 double figure scoring contests in 2012-2013 while handing out a season-high 13 assists against Niagara County Community College. Blackwell signed with West Virginia State, a NCAA Division II school out of high school, but sat out the 2011-2012 season as a redshirt.
The Rochester High School product was a Third Team All-State selection as a junior for the Rams while being named conference Most Valuable Player that same season. As a senior in 2010-2011, Blackwell was named to the Fab 5, which represented the top five seniors in the Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League. He also was ranked eighth in the Pittsburgh Top-100 Basketball Report. Blackwell concluded his prep career scoring 1,456 points.
Blackwell will have two years of eligibility remaining upon his arrival at Lourdes. He intends upon majoring in criminal justice.
