The Owens Community College baseball program is preparing to enter the 2014-15 school year. With that, third-year head coach Devin Taylor has announced a sophomore showcase event, while some current and former players also recently wrapped up their summer ball seasons.
SUMMER BASEBALL SUCCESS
Sophomore infielder Alec Skender (Metamora/Metamora, Ill.) was named an all-league player after hitting .296 for the Park City Rangers in Wichita, Kansas. In 170 plate appearances over 40 games, he produced 42 hits, six doubles, 29 RBI, 23 runs and 20 walks.
Another sophomore-to-be, outfielder Charlie Sipe (Northrop/Fort Wayne, Ind.), hit .293 with the Rangers. In 130 plate appearances over 33 games, he had 34 hits, six doubles, 20 RBI, 16 runs and 13 walks.
In addition to those two, outgoing sophomores Austin Legate (Strongsville/Strongsville, Ohio), Zach Kazmierski (Whitmer/Toledo, Ohio) and Dru Sebastian (Blackhawk Christian/Fort Wayne, Ind.) also played summer ball. Legate, a catcher/corner infielder also played with the Rangers, while Kazmierski, an outfielder, was with the Kansas Cannons and Sebastian, a pitcher, was with the Dubois County Bombers.
Former Owens baseball player Nick Collins was also a member of this summer's Park City Rangers squad. Additionally, current Owens baseball assistant coach Zach Tanner is currently playing with the Frontier Greys this summer. The Greys are an independent team in the Frontier League.
Taylor has announced that there will be a sophomore showcase event on Aug. 29 at 1 p.m. The event, to be held at the Owens baseball field on the Toledo campus, will feature a pro style workout and all four-year coaches are invited.
