Bowling Green State University women's basketball assistant coach Jesse Fleming has been selected to attend the inaugural Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Assistant Coaches Leadership Workshop. Fleming is one of 40 coaches who will participate in the workshop.
The WBCA is partnering with the United States Marine Corps to conduct this workshop, which runs from August 26-29 in Parris Island, S.C.
"I am excited and honored to participate in the WBCA Assistant Coaches Leadership Workshop," said Fleming, who is entering his third year on the BGSU staff. "The leadership and training abilities of the marines is unmatched. I look forward to learning skills from this workshop that will help me grow as a coach, mentor and person."
The two-and-a-half day intensive leadership workshop is an invitation-only event that will be held at the Marine Corps Recruiting Depot. The workshop is designed to teach assistant coaches from across the nation Marine Corps small-unit leadership tactics, techniques and procedures. The workshop provides for unity of command and effort throughout the event. Small-unit leadership will be readily observable for the coaches as they operate near, and interact with, drill instructors, recruits and supporting Marines.
The United States Marine Corps is covering all costs associated with this workshop, including travel, and does not require a financial contribution from any individual or institution.
"This is a tremendous opportunity for Jesse, as one of only 40 individuals who will participate in this unique leadership training session," said Roos. "The WBCA and the United States Marine Corps have combined to put together an exciting event. Having the opportunity to learn a wide variety of leadership strategies will be a great experience for Jesse."
In his first two years on the BGSU coaching staff, Fleming has helped the Falcons to an overall record of 54-16, a Mid-American Conference mark of 28-6 and a pair of national postseason tournament appearances. BG has won a total of five games in the WNIT over the last two years, including a trip to the quarterfinals in 2013-14. The Falcons went 30-5 overall and 17-1 in MAC play last season, capturing the team's ninth conference regular-season title in the last 10 years.
