Lourdes Notes at Aces in August Classic

Posted: Updated:
Upcoming in Gray Wolves Volleyball: Lourdes University opens its fifth season of intercollegiate volleyball this weekend as the Gray Wolves participate in the Aces in August Classic hosted by Rio Grande.  The Gray Wolves will play a pair of matches on Friday evening to open the tournament before adding two more contests on Saturday afternoon.

Head Coach Greg Reitz: In his fifth season on the Lourdes bench, Greg Reitz has a 68-69 (.496) record at the helm of the Gray Wolves.  In his sixth season overall as a women’s head coach, Reitz has an 88-104 (.458) career mark.  He is the only head coach in Lourdes program’s history.

Series Notes: Lourdes and Union (Ky.) have met one time previously with the Gray Wolves posting a five-set victory on Sept. 1, 2012 at the Rio Grande quad.  Rio Grande holds a 3-1 all-time advantage against Lourdes.  The Red Storm won both meetings between the schools in 2012 before the two sides split a pair of 3-1 decisions at Owens CC on Oct. 11-12, 2013.  Lourdes has never faced Taylor University or University of the Cumberlands on the volleyball court.

Wrapping Up 2013: Lourdes finished 2013 with a 21-13 overall record and a 5-6 mark in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference, tying for seventh place in the league standings.  The Gray Wolves advanced to the WHAC tournament championship match and earned a bid to the NAIA National Championship Opening Round.  The Gray Wolves fell in four sets to #12 Georgetown (Ky.) in the national tournament but finished the season winning six of its final eight matches.

Scouting Union (Ky.): The Bulldogs finished the 2013 season 26-9 overall and 17-3 in the Appalachian Athletic Conference, falling in the conference tournament championship to Bryan (Tenn.).  Union returns 11 players from last year’s squad, including Paige Moore who led the team in kills (453) and Ana Calaza who led the team in digs (743).

Scouting Taylor: The Trojans posted a 19-12 record overall and a 13-5 mark in the Crossroads League in 2013, falling to Indiana Wesleyan in the conference tournament semifinals.  Taylor returns nine players from last year’s squad, including Olivia Griffith who led the team with 623 assists.

Scouting Rio Grande: The Red Storm posted a 14-16 record overall and a 7-11 mark in the Mid-South Conference in 2013, but have moved to the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in 2014.  Rio Grande returns six players from last season’s roster, including Betsy Schramm who led the team with 306 kills and Autumn Snider who had a team-high 94 blocks.

Scouting Cumberlands (Ky.): The Patriots posted a 17-12 mark overall and an 8-10 record in Mid-South Conference action one season ago.  Cumberlands has eight returnees from 2013, including Sydney Beck, the team leader in digs (299) and Megan Ganser who led the team in blocks (70) and hitting percentage (.304) last year.

Lourdes in Season Openers: Lourdes is 4-0 all-time in season-opening matches.  In 2010 the Gray Wolves swept Concordia (Mich.) on the road before posting a 3-1 triumph at Marygrove to open the 2011 season.  In 2012 Lourdes notched a sweep of Rochester (Mich.) before downing Saint Catharine (Ky.) in four sets last year at the Michigan-Dearborn Earlybird Challenge.

Award Winners Return: Keyonna Gregory became Lourdes first First Team All-WHAC selection in 2013 and returns for her senior season.  Gregory hit .271 last year, setting a new school single-season record, while leading the team with 81 blocks.  Michi Jimenez earned her second straight Honorable Mention All-WHAC honor last year after setting the school’s single season digs mark with 515 and is back for her junior season.  Sophomore Stef Comte was named to the WHAC All-Freshman Team one year ago after finishing second on the team in hitting percentage (.234) and blocks (75).

Nearing the .500 Mark All-Time: Lourdes enters the 2014 season with a 68-69 all-time record in women’s volleyball.  The Gray Wolves are entering the program’s fifth season and briefly moved over the .500 mark at the end of last season before dropping the final two matches of the year.

Despite Youth, Lots of Experience Returning: The Gray Wolves have 11 players returning from 2013 despite the fact that Lourdes has just one senior on its roster.  The Gray Wolves have added six newcomers, three of whom are transfers, in addition to a redshirt freshman.

Playing at Neutral Sites: Lourdes has played 48 of its 137 all-time matches at neutral sites, sporting a 21-27 record all-time in such matches.

Lots of Appearances: With her first set of the season, Michi Jimenez will move into sole possession of second place on the Gray Wolves’ career sets played chart.  She enters 2014 with 235 career sets.  Jimenez also enters the year fifth all-time on the matches played list as a junior with 66 contests, but is just four matches shy of tying Hannah Thompson (2010-2011) for second place.

This and That: Katie McKenty enters 2014 with 510 career kills, just 40 shy of Brooke Hearn (2010-2011) for second all-time ... Keyonna Gregory is one block shy of tying Amelia Horton (2011-2012) for second with 82 rejections.
