West Toledo neighbors look for ways to improve quality of life

Posted: Updated:
Norris Finley has been the Sleepy Hollow block watch leader for six years.  Besides keeping an eye on properties and suspicious activity, he also works to maintain a high quality of life.

"We like to think of it as one of the better neighborhoods in Toledo," Finley tells 13abc.  "I am dedicated to try and keep it that way."

Other neighborhood and block watch leaders joined city and TPD officials Wednesday night.  Most of them enjoy their community and say crime is an issue, but not overwhelming.  They do worry about declining conditions and say they need direction from Toledo leaders.

"As soon as somebody dies, the investors come and buy up our homes around us and then they turn them into rentals," says Barbara Salwisz who lives in the Bancroft Hills area.

"Those houses are livable and we want to keep them livable and we want to be sure somebody is looking after those houses besides us," says K. LaVerne Redden who is president of the London Square Area Neighborhood Club.

Police Chief William Moton and council members say meeting with residents helps them pin point their resources.  If officers know about a problem area, they can step up patrols.  It also helps residents communicate with each other about solutions that work.

"Instead of having to take off time from work to go downtown to city hall, we brought city hall to them," says Councilman Tyrone Riley who sponsored the meeting.

Residents say community meetings help them work towards the same goals and keep their neighborhoods attractive and alive.  Leaders hope to have other meetings in District One later on this year.
