Big gains for some local car dealers

Posted: Updated:
The big three just released sales numbers for august and this month Chrysler leads the charge. It saw a 20% hike from 2013 and the biggest driving force is the Jeep brand up 49%. The two Toledo-built products are among the most popular for the month. The Wrangler posted a 14% jump from last year with buyers driving nearly 18,000 Wranglers off dealer lots. The Cherokee saw sales top that number with 18,674 sold.

While results exceeded analysts' expectations, overall year-to-year sales remained flat for Ford. Truck sales fell as Ford prepares to launch its new F-150 later this year but the SUV and car sectors saw sales kick into high gear. The Ford Fusion had its best year-to-date sales since its launch in 2005.

Of the big three General Motors was the only one with a slide in overall sales, although the drop was small. Three of GM's four brands reported declines for the month, but truck sales climbed, led by a 13% hike from the Chevrolet Silverado.

Even though Ford's national numbers were flat for the month of August,  Kistler in Toledo posted a more than 40% increase year over year. In fact, the owner says it was the same story for a lot dealers around the region. President Bobby Jorgensen says leases and 0% financing are helping drive in sales at Kistler, "A lot of it is the economy. Leasing is also coming back in a big way and there is low financing. When people can have an affordable payment, maybe even the same payment they had five or six years ago, why wouldn't you get a new car? Regionally Ford was up 6%, that's for Ohio and Michigan. Here at Kistler we're up 42% year over year."

Jeep posted double digit increases in august as well. In fact, according to Chrysler the brand had its best August ever with a 49% increase nationwide. Managing Partner Denny Amrhein says Grogan's Towne had an overall double digit sales increase, "We are up about 35% over last year. We keep growing and growing. It is unbelievable." Amrhein says they're also hitting the mark when it comes to projected sales of the new Toledo built Cherokee, "We're selling 25-26 Cherokees a month and that's what I predicted. The sales numbers have picked up well. They did start out slowly but they have come on strong. Actually everything we have is moving well, it is amazing."

The Toledo built Cherokee logged its best monthly sales since it was launched last October. The Wrangler had its best August in history.
