Sensational sophomore Chico Johnson leads young Central Catholic
TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) - Entering the 2020-21 season, the lack of experience among the Central Catholic Fighting Irish boys basketball team wasn’t a secret. With a young squad, head coach Mike Floyd knew exactly who he wanted to step up and fill the leadership role, and sophomore Chico Johnson was up for the challenge.
“We knew we were going to be very young and inexperienced. We were probably gonna go through some growing pains. We challenged him and told him, We are going to put you in spots you aren’t ready for. It’s not fair, but life’s not fair. But it’s going to be great for your growth and development,” Floyd said.
The Irish have seen tremendous growth in Johnson’s game throughout the season.
“He’s been a great leader for our guys. He makes us go, the atmosphere and the team chemistry starts with him,” said Floyd. “I’m just so proud of him and how he has developed. This whole year has been great for his personal development.”
Despite their youth, Johnson and the Fighting Irish advanced to the regional semifinals, marking their longest postseason run in a decade.
